India is moving rapidly from conventional energy sources to clean and renewable alternatives. This green transition, the Government of India has launched several solar energy schemes. These initiatives aim to provide to make an  affordable, clean electricity to middle class, farmers, and rural communities while promoting energy independence and sustainability through Solar Energy.

1. PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (Free Electricity Scheme)

Launched in February 2024, this flagship scheme aims to install rooftop solar panels in one crore homes across the country. The objective is to provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month to each household.

Key Benefits:

• 60% subsidy for systems up to 2 kW capacity
• 40% subsidy for 2–3 kW capacity systems
• Up to ₹15,000 per year in savings on electricity bills
• Sell surplus power back to the grid and earn income

Eligibility:

• Must be an Indian citizen
• Should have own roof space and a valid residential electricity connection
• Must not have availed any prior solar subsidy scheme

• Select your state, district, and electricity distribution company
• Enter your consumer account number and complete the application

2. PM-KUSUM (Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan)

Designed specifically for farmers, PM-KUSUM promotes solar-powered irrigation and aims to make agriculture self-reliant in energy.

  Three Main Components:

• Grid-connected solar power plants on barren land
• Standalone solar pumps
• Solar conversion of existing diesel/electric pumps

Benefits:

• Up to 60% subsidy on solar pump installations
• 30% bank loan, and only 10% farmer contribution
• Extra income from selling excess electricity to the grid

3. Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar Programme – Phase II

Extended till 2026, this scheme promotes rooftop solar installations across urban and rural homes.

Highlights:

• Subsidies available for systems up to 3 kW
• Applicable for residential and institutional buildings
• Significant reduction in monthly power bills

4. Model Solar Village Initiative

The Government aims to develop at least one solar-powered village in every district. These villages are selected and funded up to ₹1 crore to become role models in clean energy adoption.
